Auditions Announcements Soon for Ayckborn’s “The Norman Conquests”

auditions-poster2019 marks an important year for Blaine Community Theater: our twentieth anniversary!

We wanted to do something special to honor the occasion, so we looked back to our beginnings, and the first show ever produced under the Blaine Community Theater banner was Alan Ayckbourn’s “Round and Round the Garden”. The first impulse was, obviously, “Well, let’s do that again!” But “Round and Round the Garden” isn’t just a singular play, it’s part of a trilogy of Ayckbourn plays that, along with “Living Together” and “Table Manners”, make up “The Norman Conquests”.

The interesting thing about “The Norman Conquest” is that all three plays involve the same six characters and their exchanges in an English manor house over a weekend. Each play focuses on a room in the house, and they are written in such a manner that one does not have to experience the plays in any particular order, or, for that matter, all of the plays. Each story stands on its own as well as feeding into the others.

So, with theatrical eyes that are dangerously close to the size of our theatrical stomachs, we thought, “Sure, let’s do all three!”

So we’ll be announcing audition dates soon for The Norman Conquests. The cast is 3 men and 3 women, from ages 18-50. In particular, we’re looking for actors and actresses that are up for a challenge, as the cast will need to learn and perform three separate plays. Rehearsals are expected to begin in May, and will continue until the shows run in late-July/early-August. If you think you’re up to such a challenge, continue watching this space, our Facebook, and our Instagram for more information soon!

Announcing the BCT Christmas Chautauqua!

imag0229.jpgDon’t come watch the show–BE the show!

Our name has three simple parts. First, “Blaine”. That’s easy, that’s the city out of which we’re operating. Also in there is “Theater”, which kinda goes hand-in-hand with a show, so again, pretty self-evident. But the last part, “Community”, that’s the part that takes a little extra effort, so that’s what we want to foster with our holiday show. Sure, it’s fun and self-serving to our egos to keep putting on shows and saying “Hey, look at us!”, but we want to see what the rest of the community can do!

Do you like to sing? Do you like to dance? Play music? Act? Do you like to write skits, songs, or poetry? Wanted to do any of the above but not sure where to start? Then you should be part of the Christmas Chautauqua!

We want you, the community, to bring your talent and ambitions and help us put together a holiday variety show  the likes of which Whatcom County has never seen! Music, singing, dancing, acting, poetry, and all manner of performance arts co-mingling together for a holiday extravaganza!

So, how does this get started? First, download this form–that’s the Christmas Chautauqua Submission Form. Tell us what the idea for your performance is. Send it off to us, and we’ll review it and schedule a time to talk with you about it. If we think we can use it in the show, we’ll help you flesh it out and get the people and objects needed to realize the vision, and get it ready for the Chautauqua.  Then, in December, you’ll join with us and the other acts in putting on a holiday extravaganza!

Submission deadline is October 26, 2018, so get your submissions in soon!

The October Annual is Coming!

But what is the October Annual?

OctoberAnnualBy the bylaws of Blaine Community Theater, every October we are to hold an annual meeting to the public. This meeting has two purposes: first of all, we get to invite all of you lovely people to give your input and thoughts on the direction of the theater, field suggestions and thoughts, and just generally get to know each other.

Secondly, the October Annual is where we elect the Board of Directors for the coming year. The board is to consist of “no fewer than five but no more than seven” members, and the Board will be nominated and voted upon by the attendees of the October Annual. (It isn’t necessary that nominees be present at the meeting to be nominated, but they do have to be willing to serve on the Board of Directors if elected–no forcibly elected board members.) Once the board is elected, they will themselves elect who holds the offices of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer at the next board meeting.

The October Annual will be taking place October 3rd, 2018 at 6:00 PM in the Blaine Library Meeting Room. Hope to see you all there!
